Yarmouth, Maine native Hanley Denning gave the gift of education to the Children of the Guatemala City Garbage Dump after founding the organization "Safe Passage" in 1999 at 29 years of age.

Hanley was taking care of only a handful of children when she started Safe Passage in a small, abandoned church across from the Dump. Today, Safe Passage cares for 600 children and families living in devastating poverty.

Sadly, on January 18, 2007, Hanley Denning was killed in Guatemala City when a bus crossed a median, and crashed into the vehicle that she was a passenger in. She was 36 years old.
